Community members and allies this might not yet be on your radar, as little information is currently available in English, but this week is critical in the fight to protect LGBTQ+ rights in Portugal.
Major LGBTQ+ organizations and activists are calling for mobilization across the country, as Parliament prepares to debate proposals that could repeal Portugal’s Gender Self-Determination Law.
Demonstrations are being organized in several cities:
- Lisbon – March 19, 3:30 PM, Assembly of the Republic
- Porto – March 19, 3:30 PM, City Hall
- Coimbra – March 20, 4:30 PM, City Hall
- Braga – March 20, 6:00 PM, City Hall
The Assembly of the Republic will discuss three bills aimed at repealing Law No. 38/2018, the self-determination law that protects the rights of trans and intersex people.
At stake are concrete proposals to roll back rights already recognized by law. These proposals represent a serious attack on the autonomy, dignity, bodily integrity, and legal recognition of trans and intersex people in Portugal.
That is why mobilization is essential.
